SKIPPER Charlie Bond says Amersham & Chiltern’s training this week was ‘very tense’ ahead of their do-or-die relegation decider on Saturday.
But the captain is confident his team will overcome their nerves and win the crunch battle.
The Weedon Lane outfit travel to Bristol to take on Old Redcliffians – the team just above them in the table.
And only a win will do, or they will drop back down after just one season in National League Three South West.
Bond said: “It’s not been easy to concentrate at work this week. You could see the tension in the players in training this week. I think we just all want it to be Saturday now.
“We are determined not to be one season wonders. We feel we belong in this league. We are maybe just paying for having made a poor start, because the step up took us by surprise and we weren’t quite at the fitness levels you need.
“That has changed now and our new players have blended into the squad better and there is more cohesion than when they beat us [13-8] at the start of the season.
“I really don’t think we will go down, though if we did we would be in a much better shape than when we last went up. We have a great structure here.
“We plan to be very thorough in our approach on Saturday. We’ve had our opponents watched and our plan will be to get the ball out wide and to try and bully them up front from the start.”
