AMERSHAM and Chalfont Hockey Club’s dreams of claiming the National Vase came to an end on Sunday as an injury depleted squad fell to a fourth-round defeat at Hampshire club Hamble.
Despite the freezing temperatures it was the visitors who started off on the front foot and it wasn’t long before Chris Yoxall played a sublime flick pass over the top of the defence for Warren Scott to fire past the goalkeeper.
Hamble responded and grabbed an equaliser before goalscorer Scott was fouled by the home keeper allowing Yoxall to restore the Amersham & Chalfont lead with a penalty flick.
It was an even affair with action at both ends but the visitors suffered a blow to morale as they conceded an equaliser on the stroke of half-time.
The game could have gone either way in the second period, but as the game progressed into the dying stages it was the home side, with more replacements to call on than the injury hit Bucks club, who looked the fresher, and eventually they broke through, scoring three late goals to make sure Amersham & Chalfont have to wait until next season for their next shot at the vase.
The club are always on the lookout for new players. Information can be found at www.achc.org.uk for those interested in joining.
