Waddock: 'Centre-back signing a must'

GARY Waddock is working to bring an experienced centre-back to Adams Park as he prepares to be without Dave Winfield for two games.

The Blues boss will be without Winfield (pictured) after he picked up 10 bookings while fellow defender Leon Johnson is locked on nine yellows.

Waddock moved to bring in midfield men Craig Eastmond and Chris Hackett this week to leave fans wondering why no defensive cover had been recruited.

No side in League One has shipped more goals than Wycombe's 63 this season but the Blues chief has reassured supporters that he is scouring the market for a defender.

He said: “Dave is a wholehearted player but I think he has picked up one of his bookings for dissent so there is no need for that.

“Johnno is on nine bookings so that is an area we need to address. Players are not stacked up on shelves but we need to do something at centre-half.

“It is not as easy as everybody imagines. You can't turn it down when two players of their quality (Eastmond and Hackett) become available as much as we wanted to do something at the back.

“We will keep plugging away at that. We are fortunate we have Laingy (Louis Laing) but we don't want another young player at the back. It has to be an experienced one.”
