Sam Wood’s lightning-quick header fired Wycombe Wanderers to a massive victory over promotion rivals Shrewsbury at the weekend.

The former Brentford midfielder opened the scoring inside the first minute at Adams Park and the Blues held on to take a huge step towards a top-three finish and automatic promotion to League One.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth believes his side were worthy winners and saluted his Chairboys squad for their impressive work ethic and application.

He said: “It's a fantastic result but we've got to back it up on Tuesday. Let's enjoy today though. The boys have set the bar really high and their application and work ethic is second-to-none.

“It's a big win and I thought we deserved it. We really came out at them with a high tempo and put them under pressure.

“We set up to stop them playing and to get the early goal was a bonus. They really came at us in the second half but we saw the game out really well.”
