Matt McClure saw red just seconds after coming on against Tranmere but Wycombe Wanderers still managed to hold on for all three points.

Fred Onyedinma got the winner at Prenton Park last night as the on-loan Millwall striker netted his fifth goal in four games to secure the points after Jordan Hugill had cancelled out Paul Hayes’ opener from the penalty spot.

McClure’s dismissal moments after coming off the substitute’s bench was the only blot on the copybook for Gareth Ainsworth’s men, with the Wanderers boss defending his forward over the incident.

Ainsworth said: “I know Matty McClure very well, and he would never try and hurt anyone, but I think he’s jumped up and if he has caught him in the mouth with his arm, then it’s a red card.

“It’s unfortunate but it happens. There’s no way Matty would mean to do that, so he’s got my backing. I think he’s led with his arm, but he hasn’t meant to elbow the guy in any way.”
