MATT McClure reckons he has matured into a player ready to play a starring role for Wycombe next season.

It would be hard to find many other players in the country who have endured a more up and down year than the 20-year-old forward.

After a good pre-season he broke his ankle on loan at Hayes and Yeading in August and conquered a tough rehabilitation to return in February.

The striker scored his first professional goal in the defeat at Scunthorpe in March and started the final game of the season in front of 40,000 fans at Hillsborough – days after being called up for Northern Ireland U21 European Qualifying duty.

He said: “I think I have matured quite a lot and got my first goal which was nice to get out of the way. The injury set me back but you have to deal with that and I think I have come back quite well.

“I was hoping to get a few more starts but it has been good.

“When I told people I was starting (at Sheffield Wednesday) they told me to relax but I don't get nervous and I was more excited than anything. It was a great experience.”

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock said next year is a big season for McClure to kick-on and the front-man insists he is ready to make the step up after 17 of his 20 appearances this season came from the bench.

“Next season is massive for me,” he said. “I need to come back in pre-season flying because I don't want to be watching every Saturday getting 10 or 15 minutes here or there.

“I want to be getting 90 minutes every week.”
