GARY Waddock hailed his 'outstanding' players after they ended their away hoodoo and continued their survival charge in style.

A 4-1 win at Bury moved Wanderers to within one point from League One safety with Stuart Beavon blasting a superb hat-trick.

Waddock admits it was the perfect 50 th birthday gift from his players and said the victory, and Bury's penalty miss, can be the catalyst for the rest of the season.

“They have made an old man – sorry a middle-aged man – very happy,” he said. “They were excellent and it was a nice way to celebrate with an away win and performance like that.

“There are always moments and games in seasons when it turns around and that penalty miss was a turning point in the game. But we deserved the win.

“They have been outstanding on the training ground throughout the season but have backed that up with performances in recent weeks. They have showed character and strength.”

Waddock had special praise for top scorer Beavon who took his tally to 20 with his treble at Gigg Lane.

He said: “Ever since I have been at the club he has shown the quality but he has added goals to his game and the goals he scored today were outstanding.

“I am delighted he got his hat-trick and he is right on top of his game.”
