A triumphant dog owner from Chalfont St Peter walked away from the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Old Windsor Fun Day on Saturday July 2 with two very proud pooches.
Sarah Chapman Pemberton entered her dogs, Jake and Bella, into the Most Fabulous Fella and Loveliest Lady dog classes respectively, only for Jake to place fifth, from about 40 dogs, and Bella to come first.
Three-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback cross Bella came from Stokenchurch Dog Rescue two years ago. She was found straying in Oxford, dangerously underweight at 12 kilos, and was very anxious. Sarah slept beside her puppy crate at first, until Bella began to trust her. Bella is now a healthy 30 kilos.
One-year-old Border Collie cross Jake was a Battersea dog and came to join the family in May 2015. Jake and Bella loved each other from the off, racing around the table together the first time they met.
Sarah said: “We came to the Battersea Fun Day last year but didn’t enter any of the dog classes. Everyone always says how beautiful Bella and Jake are so we decided to this year.
"I couldn’t believe it when Jake came fifth and then when Bella came first, apparently my face was a right picture! She is the most chilled, lovely dog and Jake has really taken her lead. We love rescue dogs so much because even the ones with special issues still love unconditionally. Training them is as fun for us as it is for them; you get a real insight into their behaviour.”
