Motorists face traffic chaos tonight as a mobile crane burst into flames on the M40.

As getbucks understands traffic on the the motorway southbound closed and will remain so overnight.

35 firefighters and six engines raced to the M40 around 9.30pm this evening (Wednesday September 21) between junctions 2 (Beaconsfield) and 1a (M25 interchange) to battle the blaze.

TV presenter Gethin Jones Tweeted earlier this evening: "Witnessed terrible explosions on the M40.

"Stuck in the tail back for an hour and not gonna be moving soon. Thoughts with those involved."

Shanice, @Shanice_xo, took a video of the flames, and said: "We heard a loud bang, our house shook 100 foot flames and so we went to go see a crane has exploded but not sure about center."

Elena Prokopiou Tweeted: "Felt, heard and can smell the explosions from my house. Really hope no one is hurt #m40 #Gerrards cross."

Hannaha Bishop Tweeted: "Local word is it's a huge crane on hard shoulder.

"Explosions were tyres and fuel tank going up in flames.

"Terrifying end to today #M40 #M25."

Firefighters are using compressed air foam, main jets, hose reels, breathing apparatus and a water tanker.

Bucks and MK Fire Tweeted from earlier in the night: "Calls about this also came from Fulmer Drive and Howards Wood Drive area of Gerrards Cross reporting smoke and explosions."

At at around 10.20pm wrote: "#M40 latest from crews: "Large vehicle well alight, foam and hose reels in use, fire affecting all lanes"."

Highways England Tweeted at 9.42pm: "Buckinghamshire Traffic has been halted on the #M40 s/bound, J2 - J1a, due to a HGV fire. It's likely we'll have to close the motorway."
