Location of Chesham's new day centre is criticised

THE location of where a new day care centre will be built has been criticised by service users.

Bucks County Council has announced that the chosen site for its day opportunity centre, in Chesham, will be Chiltern View Children’s Home, in Nalders Road, which is due to close as part of a restructuring of children and family services.

The new centre, expected to open in summer 2014, will be close to the Endeavour Centre, which closed on April 30 as part of the council’s planned programme to replace 22 day centres with six day opportunity centres.

Marilyn Gates, of Reynolds Lane, Chesham, whose son Simon uses the Endeavour’s Outreach Centre, said: “I think it’s ridiculous that they’ve moved all these dear students and split them up across the county to then move them back in next door. They should’ve stayed where they were, at least until they built the new place, to minimise the disruption they’ve caused.

“I don’t know why they didn’t just revamp the Endeavour Centre, it's provided a good service all these years. I think a lot of people will feel the same about this.”

Chesham’s town crier William Ellis, 33, of Bois Moor Road, used to attend the Endeavour Centre until its closure. He now uses the Outreach Centre, in East Street.

His mother Carol said: “I’m surprised at the location, I didn't think it would be so close. I don’t understand why the Endeavour Centre had to close before the new one has opened? I think it’s a big disruption for the users.”

Bucks County Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, Patricia Birchley, said: “This is very good news for our clients, who must have as much certainty as possible about their future services. Our aim is always to provide an excellent service for disabled people and I intend to take a personal interest in the development of the new centre.”

In September the council hopes to hold an event for people to view the plans, speak to architects, and give feedback before submitting the plans in November.
