A RESOLUTE Cheryl Gillan has told the Advertiser she has conveyed the fears and concerns of her constituents in the battle to stop the high-speed rail line going through the Chilterns.

The MP for Chesham and Amersham joined lobbyists in speaking to transport secretary Justine Greening last month to express their fears about the plans.

“The meeting went well and Justine really listened – that I can completely and honestly say. I don’t think I could have done anything more for the people of my area to convey their concerns and fears. I’ve attended events, been to lobbies and had meetings with HS2 Ltd.

“The chairman Sir Brian Briscoe has agreed to meet again to discuss further mitigation if the preferred route goes ahead.”

About the route itself, she said: “If they take it to the next stage, there would still be a long way to go with things like a judicial review possible. If it isn’t, we’ll know we’ve achieved our aim.”

Last month bookmaker William Hill slashed the odds of Mrs Gillan resigning as Secretary of State for Wales in protest at the plans to 2/1 – Great Missenden campaigners called for her to make this stand last year and join them in fighting the plans.

She said: “I’ve already answered that in the House [of Commons] and I’m not going to speak on it again.

“I never said I would resign from Cabinet. I would resign from the whip on voting on the Bill [on HS2]. Everyone can speculate, but I made my views clear in front of the Prime Minister.”

? Campaigners will protest at her weekly surgery in Amersham tomorrow (Friday) at 11am.
