CHESHAM is celebrating being the first Chilterns town to be awarded Walkers are Welcome (WAW) status.

The award commits the town to ensuring that its footpaths are well-signed and maintained. Volunteers have already started a survey of the 135 footpaths in the town to ensure they are in good condition.

The award was made after the town's WAW steering group successfully gathered the 500 signatures needed to earn the status.

Henricus Peters, chairman of Chesham WAW, said: "We are thrilled with receiving this recognition and look forward to working closely with all people and groups in Chesham in the cause of enhancing its reputation as a place for everyone who enjoys walking."

Councillor Justine Fulford said: "The meticulous planning, lobbying and route mapping of the team, which has culminated in the new WAW status, will hopefully persuade walkers to

include the lovely town centre as part of their outing, assured of receiving a refreshing greeting when they call in to the local businesses who display the WAW logo."
