Animation and Visual Effects student Anton Alfimenko, 20, has won Best Travel Film at the Global Short Film Awards Gala in Cannes.

The Buckinghamshire New Universit y student was surprised how little people knew about his country.

"When I moved to the UK I found myself answering so many questions about Borat because people knew little or nothing about Kazakhstan."

He then resolved to educate his peers about his country and hometown, Almaty.

Anton celebrated his heritage by filming his beautiful hometown of Almaty in Kazakhstan

Welcome to Almaty was filmed and produced by him, with sound mixing done by Jack Blenkinsop, an Audio and Media Production student, also at Bucks New University.

The film was part of the Global Short Film awards in New York, with the gala itself taking place in May in Cannes.

“It's the first film festival I’ve won so it's a great experience. It also came out of the blue, with the festival itself taking place in New York and the awards in Cannes. It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind.”
